BOOK 2 SCREEN PICK
Harrow Country by Cullen Bunn & Tyler Crook (Dark Horse Comics 2015- ongoing)
Agent: Cullen Benn
Summary: Emmy always knew that the woods surrounding her home crawled with ghosts and monsters. But on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, she learns that she is connected to these creatures.
Notes: Cullen Bunn, as a supremely talented comic writer, he is really, really good at creating spooky, Gothic atmospheres. A lot of potential for a folk horror style tv adaptation. It follows Emmy, a true farm girl, growing up in what seems to be a tight-knit small community. You’ve got a girl on the cusp of womanhood who may be in danger, townspeople harboring a secret past, and a mystery that gets more frightening the closer it gets to being solved. Lots of accents, woods, and creepy shit happening all at once.
Emmy is about to turn eighteen, and eighteen years ago the people around the area murdered a young girl who was said to be a witch. She said she would return. Is Emmy that witch? Well… So if you like Stephen King or Dean Koontz.
A role to really sink your teeth into, the female lead gets to play. Our protagonist Emmy undergoes several drastic character changes we see her turn from the innocent, sweet naive girl we met in the first arc to a much mature, hardened, young woman with filled with wisdom beyond her years, and she will need that wisdom for what’s coming next. For the dark times aren’t over, they’ve just begun.
