‘Stan Lee’s 1970s comic strip The Virtue of Vera Valiant is being turned into a movie in China after Lee’s Pow! Entertainment struck a deal with China’s Tianying Media.
Tianying has acquired The Last Resort, a screenplay written by Lee and Bob Underwood. The film follows the story of a woman who inherits a resort hotel in space. Tianying is looking to go into production later this year and it is currently in talks with top Chinese comedy filmmakers to board the project.
The script was brought to Tianying by producers Elliot Tong and Reinhard Schreiner, who founded LA-based Roaring China, which aims to shephered projects and bring A-list Hollywood talent to the Chinese market.
Tianying Media, which is closely associated with the state-owned enterprise Tianjin North Film Group, has previously part-financed Shu Qi-fronted Shanghai Fortress.
The deal was negotiated by Randy Mendelsohn for Tianying, who will also serve as Executive Producer on the film. Lee, Sheri Rosenberg Kelton and Bob Underwood, will also Executive Producer, along with Tong and Schreiner serving as producers.
“Stan Lee is a true legend of our time. We are so excited to be working with Pow! Entertainment and to be able to bring the amazing script of The Last Resort to life,” said Wu Jian, CEO of Tianying Media, “We are focusing on the Chinese market, a rapidly-growing audience that is extremely hungry for new ideas and a variety of different films.”
“We want to keep this momentum going with more acquisitions. This is a great feat for Tianying Media and Chinese production as a whole,” added Elliot Tong.’
