‘Netflix has released the first trailer for its adaptation of Josh Malerman’s post-apocalyptic thriller novel Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock as a mother who must shield her children from an evil force while also fighting for her own survival.
The trailer opens with a blindfolded Bullock deep in a forest as she struggles to get her bearings, with the unseen monster beckoning, “Open your eyes.” The creature is said to take the visual form of each person’s worst fear — hence the cautionary blindfold.
Not daring to remove the fabric from her eyes, Bullock instead screams, “Please, don’t take my children!”
The remainder of the trailer sees multiple side characters suffer mental breaks, succumbing to the monster’s wicked powers. A woman smashes her head into a glass window; Sarah Paulson’s character nearly drives a car off the road. In the chaos, Bullock’s mother figure must decide how much information to share with her children.
“Your kids, they deserve hope,” co-star Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) says.
“Every single decision I have ever made has been for them,” Bullock replies.
Eventually deciding to take a dangerous, blindfolded trip downriver to escape evil’s clutches, Bullock prepares her children for what will be a terrifying and possibly fatal journey.
“Listen to me,” she tells them. “We are going on the trip now. It’s going to be rough. If you hear something in the woods, you tell me. If you hear something in the water, you tell me. But under no circumstance are you allowed to take off your blindfold.”
Directed by Susanne Bier, the film also stars Rosa Salazar, David Dastmalchian, John Malkovich, BD Wong, Parminder Nagra and Lil Rel Howery.
Bird Box will be available on Netflix and in select theaters Dec. 21.’
