‘Netflix’s hard push into science fiction and genre programming continues with the pickup of The One, a series from Misfits and Future Man creator Howard Overman. The series is based on a novel by John Marrs.
The streaming giant has picked up 10 episodes of the show from Urban Myth Films and StudioCanal.
The series is set “five minutes in the future” in a world where a DNA test can reveal a person’s perfect partner — the one you’re genetically predisposed to fall passionately in love with. But it also raises other questions: Who hasn’t thought about whether there is someone better out there? What if a hair sample is all it takes to find them? The idea is simple, but the implications are explosive.
Overman is writing The One and will executive produce with Urban Myth’s Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy. The trio are principals in Urban Myth and have previously collaborated on BBC America’s Atlantis and the Channel 4/Netflix series Crazyhead.
The One is the latest genre series to land at Netflix. The company also has adaptations of Locke & Key, October Faction and Daybreak, plus a Lost-esque series called The I-Land, starring Kate Bosworth, in the pipeline. Those will follow on the heels of recent breakouts The Haunting of Hill House and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.’
