‘Ian Ziering, best remembered as Steve Sanders on Beverly Hills 90210, is joining the cast of the upcoming DC Universe series Swamp Thing in the recurring guest star role of a Hollywood has-been Daniel Cassidy, a.k.a. the Blue Devil.
Ziering’s extensive film and TV credits include the Sharknado series, Melrose Place, CSI: NY, What. I Like About You and Endless Love.Ziering also competed on the fourth season of the ABC hit series Dancing with the Stars.
The official character description for Ziering’s character: “Stuntman turned movie star, Daniel Cassidy became semi-famous after playing the demonic Blue Devil. But now, eight years later, Cassidy finds himself living out his days in frustration, pining for his former fame while on a collision course with destiny.”
The Blue Devil character was introduced in the pages of DC Comics in 1984 and got his own series that same year. It lasted for 31 monthly issues. In the comics, the stuntman is in costume for a Hollywood special-effects film when a real demon mistakes him as an authentic peer. Swamp Thing is billed as an edgy, horror-infused adaptation of the DC Comics character who was introduced in the 1970s and reached a creative zenith in the 1980s comics written by Alan Moore (Watchmen, V For Vendetta). No specific release date has been announced but the show is expected to join the offerings on the recently launched DC Universe subscription streaming service sometime in 2019.
The show’s longline says it followed Abby Arcane as “she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.”
James Wan, Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear and Len Wiseman are executive producers of Swamp Thing, which is based on the DC Comics character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson.
