‘The Netflix series The Punisher, the high-caliber vigilante saga based on the popular Marvel Comics crime-fighting commando, will return with the Jan. 18 release of Season 2, according to the just-released teaser trailer.
The slate of Marvel adaptations were a splashy, attention-grabbing get for Netflix when they were announced in 2013 but to secure it they agreed to pay production costs without any ownership stake. That limited upside was acceptable until Marvel’s parent, Disney, announced the 2019 launch of Disney+, a direct rival to Netflix that will have Marvel Studios content as a flagship in its subscription armada.
Factor in Disney’s plan to also withdraw its past and present content from Netflix in the months ahead and it’s no surprise that the Netflix view of its Marvel shows went from “tolerably expensive” to “urgently expendable.”
The Punisher is based on the Marvel Comics character introduced in a 1974 issue of The Amazing Spider-Man and created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru. For the Netflix series, Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer. The cast also features Ben Barnes (Billy Russo), Amber Rose Revah (Dinah Madani), Jason R. Moore (Curtis), Josh Stewart (John Pilgrim), and Floriana Lima (Dr. Krista Dumont).’
