New Extreme-Ski Feature Based ‘Tracking the Wild Coomba’

‘In the wake of the incredible National Geographic documentary Free Solo, which chronicles the first free solo climb of El Capitan’s 3,000-foot wall in Yosemite, comes another extreme-sports film. This one focuses on the late Doug Coombs, who pioneered back-country skiing, heli-skiing and mountain side skiing.

This one is being developed and produced by Outside Studios and Fort Point Media; the feature is based on the Rob Cocuzzo book, Tracking the Wild Coomba: The Life of Legendary Skier Doug Coombs.

Fort Point Media, a run by bestselling authors Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, acquired the rights to the book and have set the project up with Outside Studios, a unit of Outside Integrated Media, LLC. Moviegoers will remember that Outside magazine provided the original material for several big outdoor-adventure films including Everest, 127 Hours, Into the Wild, Blue Crush and The Perfect Storm.

“Doug’s story fits in perfectly with our mission to celebrate the human spirit and tell incredible tales of survival, heroism, endurance and adventure,” Outside chairman Larry Burke said in a statement. Coombs became a ski legend before his tragic death on a French mountain in 2006.

Added Sherman and Wedge in a prepared statement: “Doug Coombs was an icon and a true pioneer, and his life is an incredible story that needs to be told. We have the team to tell it with the epic scope it deserves.”

Sherman and Wedge also wrote the 2015 book Boston Strong: A City’s Triumph Over Tragedy, which was used in the adaptation for the 2017 Mark Wahlberg film Patriots Day, and 2017’s Ice Bucket Challenge: Pete Frates and the Fight against ALS, which is in development as a Netflix feature with Casey Affleck attached.

Along with Michael J. Tougias, Sherman also co-authored The Finest Hours, a bestseller that was the basis of the 2016 Disney film that starred Affleck and Chris Pine.

Sherman is also working with Fox 2000 and producer Greg Berlanti on the mob feature Thacher Island, which is based on Sherman’s 2014 book Animal: The Bloody Rise and Fall of the Mob’s Most Feared Assassin.

Outside Studios, Fort Point (along with Sherman and Wedge) are all repped by The Gotham Group.’
