‘Anne Hathaway is set to play the grand high witch in Robert Zemeckis’ feature adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1973 novel The Witches.
We’ve been hearing about her circling the project since November, and sources say the Oscar-winning Les Miserables best supporting actress is now attached. We also hear Viola Davis is circling the project as well.
The Witches follows a seven-year old boy who stumbles upon a witch convention, and must stop them. The studio previously made a loose-adaptation of the book back in 1990 with Nicolas Roeg directing and Anjelica Huston starring. Zemeckis’ version, which he is writing, will reportedly be more faithful to the source material. Zemeckis is producing with Jack Rapke through their ImageMovers label alongside Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo del Toro.
We understand it’s a two-picture deal for Hathaway as she’ll do The Witches first for Warners, followed by the studio’s Sesame Street, which is directed by Jonathan Krisel and a musical co-production with MGM.
Hathaway is repped by CAA, Management 360, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.’
