Kevin Hart to Star in Sony’s ‘Fatherhood’

‘Kevin Hart has committed to star in Fatherhood for Sony Pictures. It will be his next film, right after he reprises in Sony’s sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Paul Weitz will direct and wrote the most recent draft of Dana Stevens’ script, which was adapted from the Matt Logelin memoir Two Kisses For Maddy: A Memoir Of Loss & Love. Producers are Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, David Beaubaire, Free Association’s Peter Kiernan and HartBeat’s Hart and John Cheng.

Hart is coming off a strong opening of The Upside, which he starred in with Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman. This continues his broadening into dramatic fare. Get out the hankies for this one. Logelin’s memoir covered his courtship and marriage to his high school sweetheart, Liz. By the time they settled in LA, they had everything, especially when they learn a daughter is on the way. After Madeline was born, tragedy struck: Liz suffered a pulmonary embolism and died instantly, even before she got to hold their daughter. There was little time to grieve a life-shattering loss for Logelin: his wife bore the brunt of their impending jump into parenting and suddenly he was the sole caretaker for a newborn daughter, his link to his beloved wife.

The studio will engage a nationwide casting search to find young Maddy.

“When I started reading this script, I was immediately touched and brought to tears,” Hart said in a statement. “At HartBeat, we seek to provide the audience with stories that evoke true emotions and this story does just that. Our hope is to bring honor to the Logelin family, and we are thrilled to be working with Sony, Paul, Temple Hill and Free Association on such an incredible project.”

This comes after Deadline revealed yesterday that Hart came attached to star in the Tim Story-directed Monopoly movie down the road for Lionsgate.

Brittany Morrissey will oversee for Sony.

Hart is repped by UTA, 3 Arts Schreck Rose; Weitz, whose films include About A Boy and Little Fockers, is repped by UTA and by attorney Alex Kohner at Morris Yorn. Stevens is represented by WME.’
