B2S Book Club August Pick: Girl Boy Girl by Savannah Knoop

Our August Books 2 Screen pick is Girl Boy Girl by Savannah Knoop (2008, Seven Stories Press). You can listen to past choices over on SoundCloud or Spotify.  We will be meeting on August 29th to discuss!

For those not in London please feel free to discuss the book/film below and we will post a recording of the group to post!

When Savannah Knoop was unmasked as the face of the mysterious author JT LeRoy in 2005, one of the biggest literary hoaxes of the modern era was revealed. Girl Boy Girl tells the story of how a young, queer college drop out came to portray the literary wunderkind JT LeRoy, a persona created by Knoop’s sister-in-law. For six years, Knoop led a secret double life, traveling through the looking glass of celebrity to find liberation and alienation in equal measures. Knoop’s entanglement with JT and his creator was a game played at the very limits of self-expression, one that changed Knoop’s sense of self forever. This edition includes a new foreword by the author reflecting on the continued life of the JT LeRoy story in the “post-truth” era.

It stars Kirsten Stewart, Laura Dern, Jim Sturgess, and Diane Kruger.

It was directed and adapted by Justin Kelly (King Cobra, Welcome the Stranger, I Am Micheal) and is set to direct the adaptation of Weetzie Bat.

The film is produced by Black Leather Jacket, Buffalo Gal Pictures, Crosby Street Films, Fortitude International, LBI Entertainment, Sobini Films, The Fyzz Facility Film One and Thirty Three Management.

We always encourage you to support your local independent bookseller in purchasing the book and independent cinemas in your viewing!
